Rack and Pinion Self-locking Gears

The article presents the research results on the synthesis of a new type of rack and pinion with helical or double helical (herringbone) gearing and a pitch point located out of gears mesh in order to achieve the self-locking effect. The rack and pinion design and geometry are given as well as self-locking properties of the said gear for both forward and reverse travel.
The terms for self-locking mode for gears with special location of a pith point are determined. The investigation proved that self-locking properties of a rack and pinion are similar to those of a spur gear. The results extend the knowledge of helical gears.
