The paper examines the history of creation and development of the scientific and pedagogical direction of applied mechanics as a part of the «Engineering Science». A particular attention is paid to the contribution of Russian scientists, the professors of IMTU and the Moscow University, A.S. Ershov, P.L. Chebyshev, D.N. Lebedev, F.E. Orlov, D.S. Zernov and N.I. Mertsalov. From the very beginning, since 1872 to the present day the course taught plays a role as an interface between the course of the general science and general engineering disciplines. A unique laboratory of mechanisms established at the MSTU named after N.E. Bauman in 1845 and having more than 500 educational demonstration models helps students to master the experimental methods for studying mechanisms and machines.
