Powder injection molding (PIM) has been used for manufacturing metal products abroad since 1980 but this technology is absent in Russia. During this time, the market has expanded significantly. It now includes a wide range of applications that change the designer's perception of the capabilities of cast technologies. Modern casting processes require a new combination of processing, manufacturing and state changing methods for the materials involved in the manufacturing process. How soon can these technologies be used in Russia and what is impeding their development? Experience shows that theoretical and process design training of mechanical engineering graduates who are involved in establishing start-up companies and writing business plans in the area of powder injection molding, must not fall below the qualitatively new level of modern metal cast technologies, and should include appropriate rheological models of materials.
