The paper covers the physical and mathematical problem formulation of water jet and abrasive water jet cutting operations of parts from aluminum alloys sheet billets. The features of the problem solution based on numerical methods of continuum mechanics and the dependence of this operation type on kinematic and physicomechanical properties of the instrument (highspeed jet) and the workpiece (target) are shown by the particular example. Advantages of using the deformation criterion of the material failure (aluminum alloy AMg6) are discussed.
