He has been working at the Bauman Moscow State Technical University (BMSTU) since 1974. Since 2008, he has served as Head of the Department of Computer Systems for Production Automation. From 2010 to 2011, he was First Vice‑Rector — Vice‑Rector for Research at BMSTU.
Sergey S. Gavriushin is an outstanding scientist, educator, and mentor who combines extensive scientific work with highly professional pedagogical activities in training and educating research and teaching staff.
He is a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) Councils on Mechanical Engineering and on Robotics and Mechatronics, and is one of the leaders of the BMSTU scientific school on structural strength. He is the author of original algorithms for analyzing nonlinear deformation processes in thin‑walled structural elements of machines and devices; multi‑criteria design of complex high‑tech products; hardware‑software support for high‑tech medical operations — all of which have been successfully implemented in practice. The results of his work in computational mechanics, automation of technological processes and production, digital design, robotics, and biomechanics are presented in more than 350 articles and reports at international and all‑Russian conferences, in 5 monographs, and are protected by 20 patents.
Holding the position of Editor‑in‑Chief at BMSTU Journal of Mechanical Engineering (Proceedings of Higher Educational Institutions. Machine Building), he also contributes to the editorial boards of multiple peer‑reviewed journals, such as: «Vestnik MSTU. Series “Natural Sciences”, and «Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Methods», «Engineering Journal: Science and Innovation», «Frontier Materials & Technologies», «Vector of Science of Togliatti State University», «Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Education», «Drives and Machine Components», and «Handling Equipment». He regularly participates in the organizing and programme committees of international congresses, symposia, and conferences.
Sergey S. Gavriushin conducts extensive educational and methodological work and is a member of the Federal Educational and Methodological Association in Mechanical Engineering. He has developed original educational courses in computational mechanics and the finite element method. As an author and co‑author, he has prepared 5 textbooks and more than 10 educational and methodological works. His textbook Strength of Materials and Structures won first place in the competition for the best scientific work at the university (2018). He was awarded the title Best Lecturer at BMSTU (2007) and won the All‑Russian competition Golden Names of Higher Education (2019).
Sergey S. Gavriushin plays an active role in the training of high‑level scientific personnel. He is the Chairman of Dissertation Council 24.2.331.12, which covers the fields of “Theoretical Mechanics and Dynamics” and “Mechanics of Deformable Solid Body”. He also serves as a member of Dissertation Councils 24.2.331.02 and 24.2.331.14. To date, he has supervised 18 Ph.D. candidates and 2 D.Sc. candidates to successful completion of their degrees.
He was elected a member of the International Federation for the Theory of Machines and Mechanisms (IFToMM); the International Federation of Nonlinear Analysts (IFNA); the Academy of Medical and Technical Sciences and is a foreign member of the National Academy of Sciences of Mongolia.
Awards and honours include the Order of the Badge of Honour; the Medal for Valiant Labour. In Commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the Birth of V. I. Lenin;, the title Honoured Scientist of the Russian Federation; the title Honoured Worker of Education of the Russian Federation; the , Honorable Badge For Merit to the University; honorable badges and diplomas from several departmental organizations.
