Ensuring safety of car manufacturing products and protecting consumer rights is a relevant task. However, scientific publications and regulatory sources lack well-grounded technical data on assessing design quality as part of the vehicle quality assessment. The paper includes images from a scanning electron microscope to illustrate the results of microanalyses made both on a section of the gasket that was not tightened properly and was exposed to combustion and a section that had no thermal damage. An optimal value of the height to width ratio has been experimentally verified for a rectangular gasket used to tighten the valve cover joint ensuring contact pressure and preventing from any misalignment during installation. An applied mathematical model has been developed to determine the geometric characteristics of a deformed cross-section of the engine valve cover gasket. The results of the theoretical calculation obtained clearly illustrate a mechanism of oil leakages in engines caused by an inadequate design of the product. The attained results can be used in forensic studies to determine causes of vehicle fires and also in the context of the vehicle quality assessment.
