The importance of this study stems from the need to reduce operational fuel consumption by vehicles working in heavy urban traffic. A method of improving fuel efficiency indicators of the vehicle power unit is considered in this article. The method employs a system of energy recovery using a flywheel as the mechanical accumulator of energy (KERS – Kinetic Energy Recovery System). The use of such systems can reduce the engine working capacity and increase the operational fuel efficiency of the vehicle. The authors have developed and used a software programme that allows them to calculate the energy balance of the vehicle power unit; that is the power indicators of the internal combustion engine, which are required for movement in accordance with a specified driving cycle. Calculations of the power unit energy balance are performed for the EUDC and HWFET driving cycles. The calculations have shown the efficiency of the KERS installation on board of the vehicle.
