Ultimate charging efficiency and optimal pipe design of two-cycle opposed piston internal combustion engine with crankcase scavenging and "tuned" intake and exhaust ducts are determined using numerical optimization by genetic algorithm. Model of engine gas exchange is based upon the system of conservation laws for quasi-one-dimensional motion of gaseous mixture and for open thermodynamic system, "closed" with the steady-state empirical characteristics: stationary relations for flows through local flow restrictions and scavenging characteristic used in context of two-zone scavenging model. Simulation results are presented in non-dimensional form.
