The potential for expediting the sketch design phase and physical prototyping of innovative products in mechanical engineering has been exhausted in the framework of the outdated sequential approach to designing specific units in complex technical systems. A transition to the concurrent engineering paradigm when multidisciplinary engineering groups are involved in a project, is a key factor in the competition in the market of innovations. Therefore, development and implementation of technologies for distributed innovation design is of current interest, especially on the interface between organisational, technical and information systems. Multi-aspect representation of a specific distributed design system constitutes a challenge to address at the system configuration phase. To solve the problem, a so-called system kernel is proposed that includes a set of architectural, construction, engineering, IT, software and organisational representations. The concept of a «heavy» system for distributed design of mechanical engineering and instrumentation equipment is introduced. This is valid in the situations when the maximal number of tools and competences are concentrated locally, whereas missing tools and competences required in a project are obtained via common information space. A practical implementation of such a system at Technopark-Mordovia is demonstrated in the framework of a project currently realized at the Centre for Innovation Design in collaboration with Bauman Moscow State Technical University. The project is aimed at creating a common information space for generating digital models of innovative products in the design environment Siemens PLM Software NX and for integrating services from geographically distributed testing centres, linked to each other via Internet.
