The paper presents results of studying a possibility of expanding the power range of the gas piston unit detonation-free operation by increasing intensity in the supercharged mixture cooling. The cooling intensity increases due to a decrease in the coolant temperature of the supercharged gas-liquid cooler. An additional heat exchanger is installed in the circulation circuit; it is cooled by water intended for operation of the water treatment plant of the combined heat and power plant boilers. Analysis of the experimental results shows that using such a heat exchanger makes it possible not only to increase the internal combustion engine power by 7.8%, but also it becomes possible to use the heat previously irretrievably dissipated in the external environment. Thermal power transferred to water entering the water treatment plant was about 250 kW. With the increased power of the internal combustion engine, the detonation intensity was not exceeding the designated limits.
