Analysis of Diesel Engine Management Methods in a Power Unit with Electric Transmission

Particular properties of different ways of vehicle control were considered under two approaches determining how the power unit operating mode is defined: with the active role of the diesel engine and with the active role of the electric traction motor. It is shown that the first approach may have an advantage from the point of view of the driving dynamics. The engine management method is proposed where the driver’s pedal signal sets the parameters and form of the electric traction motor characteristics and the engine speed according to the minimum fuel consumption characteristic. To illustrate the influence of the different power unit management methods on the vehicle performance, motion simulation results for a 505 kW Liebherr diesel truck are presented.
